Postal Index Number or PIN or Pincode is the post office numbering or post code system used by India Post . It was introduced in India on the 15th of August, 1972. The objective of PIN Code is to simplify the sorting of mails, thus speed up their transmission and delivery.
Each PIN Code has six digits.
First digit indicates the zone inwhich the Post Office is located.
Second & Third digits indicate the sub-zone and sorting district.
Fourth digit indicates the route on which the sorting office is located.
Fifth & Sixth digits indicate thenumber assigned to the deliveryPost Office.
