UID not a proof of citizenship:

Clearing misconceptions over the relevance of the UID numbers, Chairman of the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), Nandan Nilekani said that Aadhaar is just an identity number and nota proof of nationality.
Addressing mediapersons along with UIDAI Director General R S Sharma on Friday, he said, “Aadhaar can be used as an identity card for the benefit of Public Distribution System, Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan Scholarship, Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MNREGA), old-age pension schemes and various other schemes like allotment of LPG and Kerosene.”
The officials informed that along with Jharkhand, the workfor distributing Aadhaar numbers is set to start in West Bengal also.
They further informed that while UID drive would start in Bihar next year, it would be expanded nationwide within two years.
Appreciating the Jharkhand government, the top officials of UIDAI said, “This drive of making UID is going well in Jharkhand. Besides it,Government machinery too is doing enough.”
They told that 20 lakh people have been enrolled in Jharkhand and around 6.5 lakh have been given the UID cards.
When asked about nationwide development and achievement in distributing Aadhaar numbers, the officials said, “the scheme which has been Kicked off from a Maharashtra village on September 29, 2010, 1 crore people have been given UID cards during last eight months. Everyday 10 lakhs people are being enrolled for this.”
