Implementation of core banking solutions (CBS) in post offices on pilot basis has been planned in 2011-12, Union Minister of State for Information Technology and Communications Sachin Pilot has said.
"Department of Posts is considering introduction of anywhere, anytime, any branch banking through Core Banking Solutions (CBS) for small saving schemes of post offices in 2011-12," he told PTI.
He said the scheme envisaged setting up of 4,000 CBS branches (at head post offices and major sub-post offices across India).
The project will pave the way for delivery channels like ATM, Internet and mobile phone services, Pilot said.
"The Cabinet has approved a Rs 1,877 crore project for transforming the existing network of more than 1.55 lakh post offices with a view to improve their service delivery system," he said, adding the scheme is to be implemented by 2012-13.
Automated mail processing centres (AMPCs) are being set up at Delhi and Kolkata, the Minister said.
Pilot also gave details of another project ';Arrow', which envisages upgradation of post offices in urban and rural areas to enhance quality of services.
